My Conception of any sincerely religious person is that he tries to express his convictions into his life. To me, it seems that the most potent form of prayer is in work. Or like Gurdjieff said, "Work as if everything depends on work. Pray as if everything depends on prayer." It seems to me the lack of practical work leaves a religion without a skeleton, the rest of the tissue has nothing to hang on. I would say that the practical side, including much of the wisdom teachings, should not be separated from the religious except as a convention to facilitate teaching.

When talking about spells and spell casting you can get into some sticky
situations. No other subject can cause so many divisions in the pagan
community.

It seems that there are as many different ways and ethical practices as
there are gods and goddesses in the universe. If you take into
consideration that spells and the way you cast them is what makes them
effective it begins to make perfect sense why.

In effective spell casting there are three very important ingredients that
you must have, resolve, focus, and comfort.

Without resolve there can be no change, it is your commitment to an action
that is the basis of a spell. You have to really want it! Without a genuine
intention to effect a change you are casting magic to the wind, cluttering
up an otherwise flowing universe. Spells without resolve can be detrimental
undirected or worse misdirected energy is free to change unknown
situations.

Make sure you really want the change you are trying to make. When you get
it, it's yours. This is where a little divination would come in handy to
make sure you will be truly happy with the outcome of your spell.

Focus, direction, or meditation, how good can aim? The focus of your spell
casting is as important as the resolve to make a change. If you can't see
the broad side of a barn you will not have the ability to effect a change
on it. You have to be able to taste it! If you physically build a dog
house, you have to have some idea what it will look like when you are done.
A spell is like a dog house, if you don't know what it's supposed to look
like when your done, you could very well end up with a failed attempt or
worse. You have to belive it's possible. If you can't belive that something
is possible it's not. Anything is possible if you truly belive it can
happen. If you belive you can make a change and you know how the change
will take place and you can picture the end result of your spell, you are
there.

Comfort is easy, if you can't ethically accept the responsibility for your
spell or there is something that bothers you about what you are trying to
do or how you are going about it, don't. You are the power in your spell,
you are the creator and the control.

Poor comfort will mess up your focus and your resolve. Without comfort you
will have a very poor spell at best.

If you are undecided between two admirers, magick can help. Take two tulip

GOOD LUCK BLESSING

NOTE: THis is my own homemade spell, and I have found it to work VERY well!

This is a simple blessing for good luck. Actually more specifically,
it's for when you're going to be going into a potentially troublesome
situation, and DON'T want trouble! (ex. a party where some people there
could be bothersome) The feather that is used should be one that was taken
without pain...that is, one that the bird did not suffer to provide. This
can be one that was dropped from the bird naturally, or similarly given by
nature itself...not one that was stolen or taken against the bird's will.

You light 2 blue candles, and place them about shoulder length aprt in front
of you. Then taking a Tiger-eye, a Blue Agate, and a Aventurine, place them
in a triangle between the candles. Then take your feather and lay it under
the stone triangle in front of you. KNeel, and relax (basic preparation)
Then open a basic circle (I use "north, south, east, west, may this circle
now be blessed" three times, each time focusing on the circle in question,
inviting all the spirits to bless and protect. feel free to do that however
you wish though. I'm just one for simplicity. :)))

Now place your hands out straight near the flames of the candle and say:

"Oh blessed be, oh gods of fire,
Burn away my dark desires
Through the warmth that burns so free
Let vi-o-lence change now to peace"

Then taking the feather in your casting hand, hold it close to you, and
focusing your Energies into it, say:

"Blessed be thou, of Goddess of love, look in favour upon me as I venture
into danger. Leave not my side and aid me in my time of need."

Then taking the feather again, pass the tip over the stones, focusing on
the energy being absorbed into the feather, and say:

"Through these stones, let your goodness be done.
Where no pain has befallen let no blood be shed
Where no evil exists let none surmount
Where no malice is meant, let none be formed
Where love is lost, let now be found
I go in peace, I go in play
Through your goodness, let these feelings never stray.
So mote be it."

Then take the feather tip, and again trace the Pentagram on your chest,
focusing on the energies flowing into your spirit, saying:

"Blessed be my eyes that I may see your beauty.
Blessed be my ears that I may hear your good works
Blessed be my skin that I may feel your presence in my life
Blessed be my feet that I may never stray from your path
Blessed be my spirit that I may be deserving of your graces.
Blessed be...blessed be...blessed be."

(note: This part is what I use in all my rituals as a blessing. If you use
something else, substitute)

Then place the candle back down, and close the circle.

There you have it. It's a ritual I made myself, but it DOES work, I've used
it myself a few times.

And after all...as someone once told me, isn't the rituals you make
yourself the most meaningful? :))

Book: Practical Magic For Beginners Techniques And Rituals To Focus Magical Energy by Brandy Williams

Anyone can practice magic to improve their everyday lives. This comprehensive training course presents the foundations of spellcraft and ritual magic through short, simple exercises. Readers explore their energy and senses, and then move on to developing skills in extrasensory perception, divination, and introspection. Magical timing, magical processes, ritual space and tools, journaling, and dreamwork are explained and discussed in depth. This nondenominational guidebook also includes twenty rituals related to friendship, love, prosperity, health, and other common concerns.

It does not go into wide discussions on origins of wicca, it does not go on and on about wicca/witchcraft as religious system and its incorporability into your own religious belief (if different).
It goes on to explain about the way of the witch, giving plenty of exercises and sound advice on posture, meditation, grounding and centering, feeling your centre, energy work, directing energy, seeing the aura, finding your magical voice, magic circle, moon-phases, chakras etc, on to the ritual itself. No mumbo-jumbo, no religious overtones, no silly songs praising this or that goddess (if i want a book on that, I'm sure there are many available) just sound practical advice for beginners on how to enhance your capabilities and how to use your own skill in making things manifest for you.
The author draws from many sources, from wicca and Ceremonial Magic, to buddhism and martial arts - actually from most systems which acknowlledge the Energy the witch uses to manifest.

The book is very well organized, goes from basics on to more complicated stuff and does not skip a step. I wish I had known of this book years ago! Not a word in this book is wasted.

Williams accurately assesses a clear strength in this addition to Llewellyn's for Beginners series (Astrology, Chakras, Divination, Healing Alternatives, Magick, etc.) by calling her book "short on theory and long on practice." Her other fortes in this sound primer are clarity, simplicity and open-ended spiritual affiliation. Her emphasis on innate powers and abilities could invite believers of many stripes who want specific exercises to enhance their personal awareness. From the first simple experiment of holding palms close to each other to create perception of the unseen, Williams devotes two-thirds of her useful book to offering such concrete explorations of the invisible through sight, sound, feeling, movement, objects, planets and timing. She also lists the most basic tools for performing magic rituals and prefers dedicated, mundane household objects (clean broom, blue bowl, etc.), underscoring her belief that "everyone can develop enough psychic skill to... do effective ritual magic." The final third lists specific rituals for life events: e.g., finding a home or a job, getting money or taking a trip. Williams's only shortcoming is a lack of emphasis to "harm none," frequently found in other primers. Easy to follow, this useful volume will aid anyone who wants to master the basics of practical magic.

This book bridges the gap between Llwelyn's dime-a-dozen Wicca books and the great work (Magnum Opus) of Franz Bardon. In his "Initiation Into Hermetics", he spends the first half of the book getting his readers to undergo (more or less) all of the things that Brandy Williams will have you do in this book. The difference is that in Brandy's work, you don't need to have 5-6 hours a day to devote to magical study and mental mastery.

Introspection, meditation, energy, sense mastery and enhancement (individually and collectively), journal keeping, and forming better habits in general are the order of the day for all True Magi. These are the proper stones upon which you build your own temple. If you want to know more about yourself and your role in this world (and others, potentially), you owe it to yourself to buy this book!

I really enjoy Silver's books. This Love Spell Book is a very good buy for the money spent. These spells range from finding romantic, family, and pet love. And if one needs to let go of an unhealthy situation, this book offers good spells to help ease pain. Aqua Illusion would have you believe that Silver somehow went against the Wiccan Rede. But, it doesn't...the only way it could do that is if there spells designed to specifically manipulate another's free will, curse someone, or cast a love spell with someone specific in your mind and heart. But, there is nothing here to proove that! After all, The Wiccan Rede should be adopted by *all* practitioners of magick, for only a fool would cast spells that do otherwise then what The Wiccan Rede states. After all, there's far too much negativity in the world, as it is...why would you want to add to that? Anyway, but this book...it's GREAT. Albeit, not quite as good as the other 2 books in the series for 2 reasons: I thought that she would have included some information or idease for Love Altars and the Pagan Rite known as Handfasting. 2.) And, as a fan of the magickal oil recipes of Morgaga, from "Morgana's Chamber" I had expected some of her personal magickal incense and oil recipes within it. But, don't allow those laccking bits of info. to dtere you.

Especially I love the introduction as well as the beginning of the first chapter, which gives an overview of the type of visualization needed to achieve your goals while spell casting. Also, she has included appendixes in the back of the book that give more detailed information on moon phases, planets, and color correspondences, so you know the best time to perform various spells. And Silver RavenWolf does make it quite clear that the wiccan rede is against manipulating the free will of others, contrary to what some other reviews may have you believe. This book is written for both beginners and avid practioners of the craft. I would definatley reccomend this book.
