Spiritualism As Modern Witchcraft In New England From 1848 To 1866

Spiritualism As Modern Witchcraft In New England From 1848 To 1866 Cover

Book: Spiritualism As Modern Witchcraft In New England From 1848 To 1866 by Nathan Beier

This paper was written for history 396: Transformation of the Witch in American Culture. The course was taught by Professor Carol Karlsen in Winter 2009.

1848 found New York to be a hothouse of religious and social innovation. In Seneca Falls, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and other female reformers drafted the Declaration of Sentiments at the first women’s rights convention in American history; in Oneida County, John Humphrey Noyes established perhaps the most successful of the myriad communitarian projects in his socialist, "free love" Oneida Community; and in late March in Hydesville, New York, Kate and Margaret Fox claimed to have heard the mysterious "spirit rappings" that transformed the Fox sisters into national celebrities and heralded the formation of a diffuse cultural and religious phenomenon known as Spiritualism. Spiritualists, who claimed to have established direct contact with the souls of the deceased, articulated a radical religious and social platform that opposed traditional religious establishments and advocated women’s rights. Through their copious publications and popular public lectures and performances, Spiritualists attracted millions of passionate followers and invoked the contempt of many critics.

This paper seeks to understand the antebellum American Spiritualist movement in terms of the ideology and experiences of its members and the scorn it provoked from mainstream Americans. Spiritualism and the backlash surrounding it have received considerable attention from historians, so this investigation takes place with an eye toward America’s Puritan, witch-hunting past. In analyzing the motivations and meanings of attacks on Spiritualism, I consider what lingering elements of Puritanism remained in the worldview of certain New England elites. It is my hope that this approach enhances our understanding of Spiritualism in antebellum America and lends it a greater degree of "deeper historical resonance,"1 to use a phrase from Paul Boyer and Stephen Nissenbaum, concerning the enduring presence of the "witch" in American culture.

Her Hidden Children The Rise Of Wicca And Paganism In America

Her Hidden Children The Rise Of Wicca And Paganism In America Cover

Book: Her Hidden Children The Rise Of Wicca And Paganism In America by Chas Clifton

I found this book among many in my local bookstore and purchased it on the fact that the cover was eerily close to a vision in a dream I had over a year ago. I have never been happier to have had such a dream! This book, I found, was completely amazing.

While many books on Paganism focus on practice, perhaps a few focusing on philosophy, very few focus on any actual scholarship. This specific book focuses on the history of contemporary Paganism, from Gerald Gardner to more modern influential groups, such as the Church of All Worlds. The depths the author, Mr. Chas S. Clifton, provides for anyone interested in history and Pagan academia runs deeps.

Since the release of Ronald Hutton's "Triumph of The Moon" back in 2000, I have yearned for a book that would take an in-depth look at the history of modern Paganism in America. So I was more than a little excited and hopeful when I heard that Pagan academic Chas Clifton was rising to the task in his new book "Her Hidden Children: The Rise of Wicca and Paganism in America". Finally a book that would take a look at how modern Paganism and Wicca took root in American soil and became one of the fastest growing faiths in the country.

Clifton - knowing that he could in no way cover everything that has happened from the 1930s to the present - has chosen with this book to lay down some basic parameters for talking about modern Pagan history in America. First he concentrates on Wicca: it being the largest and most influential modern Pagan religion in America. Secondly, when moving out from Wicca he generally stays with groups that claim to follow "nature" or "earth" religions. Not getting much attention in this history are the "reconstructionist" Pagan faiths and feminist Wicca.

The author begins with examining Gerald Gardner and the beginning of British Wicca, looking at both Gardner's claims of a long-line of witches and historical evidence to this claim. Following this, the author discusses how Wicca came to America and how it spread.

The second chapter focuses on the change of Wicca from a Mystery Religion to a "nature" religion. The author brings to use the idea that Wicca combined a triple-form of nature, ranging from the Cosmic, Natural (Earthly), and Erotic. He shows us how Wicca became changed through the changing social changes affecting America during this time.

Throughout the rest of the book, Mr. Clifton shows his readers the struggles and effects Wicca has had in America (such as, for example, the effort to change the image of the popular "Witch), the influence Paganism has had in Popular Culture (and vice versa), and a look at other Pagan groups that have influenced Paganism on a whole (which may, or may not, have started before Wicca).

If one is interested in the history of Paganism, specifically Wicca, this is a great book to sate that interest. This book is a wonderful example of Pagan scholarship so needed in the Pagan community. I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to be a Pagan, claiming to be a Pagan, or vaguely interested in knowing about Pagans.

For Sunny Weather And Clear Skies

For Sunny Weather And Clear Skies Image
Take a small blue container and pour some water into it, preferably mineral water or spring water but any will do. Then put some salt in it and leave it in a warm place near (or on) a windowsill.

As you pour the salt into the water, imagine it (the salt) evaporating the water into clouds. Then visualize the clouds lifting, thinning, and drifting away - leaving clear skies and bright sunshine.

Now leave the container of salt water to evaporate. Do not remove it until all the water has gone. When the container is dry, say thank you to the sun and enjoy the sunny weather coming your way.

If it comes, it should be offered white wine, not red, and knelt to from pity.

Grimoire For The Green Witch A Complete Book Of Shadows

Grimoire For The Green Witch A Complete Book Of Shadows Cover

Book: Grimoire For The Green Witch A Complete Book Of Shadows by Ann Moura

The author of the popular Green Witchcraft series presents her personal Book of Shadows, designed for you to use just as she uses it-as a working guide to ritual, spells, and divination. This ready-made, authentic grimoire is based on family tradition and actual magical experience, and is easily adaptable to any tradition of Witchcraft.

This is an excellent compendium of basic (non-Gardnerian, non-trad) wiccan/ witch ritual, theology and symbology. I believe it will be especially helpful for solitary (that is, not aligned with a coven or other group) pagans who are further along their paths than absolute beginners - people who need access to well-organized, non-fluffy material to bolster their personal practice. It would probably be a bit overwhelming for beginners, but that's not a bad thing as there are already too many beginning pagan books and not enough intermediate and advanced.

One of the most attractive qualities about Moura's writing is that she makes no extravagent claims of ancient lineage and she doesn't attempt to distort history to fit her version of the Craft; many Llewellyn books in the past have been rendered nearly useless by this tendency. The material is offered as neutrally as can be, and therefore it is easily adaptable for an individual's tastes and beliefs.

Is it just me, or is the overall quality of pagan books going up recently? Kudos to Llewellyn for finally putting out a quality witchcraft reference!
Grimoire for the Green Witch offers a treasury of magical information- rituals for Esbats and Sabbats, correspondences, circle-casting techniques, sigils, symbols, recitations, spells, teas, oils, baths, and divinations. Every aspect of Craft practice is addressed, from the purely magical to the personally spiritual. It is a distillation of Green practice, with room for growth and new inspiration.

It is extremely thorough, well written as a ritual and spell book, and NOT a teaching book at all. If you are looking for a teaching book, get "Green Witchcraft III." This is the compilation of all the rituals and Magical Work from her earlier books, all written out and put into one manual. They are easy to find, easy to follow, flow together very well, and she includes a ton of extra information so it is right at your fingertips. No more hunting around and thinking "Where did I read that??" You will LOVE this book!

Born in 1947 and raised in a family oral tradition of at least three generations, Ann Moura began writing about her heritage as a Green Witch in 1993 when her mother passed away. Her maternal heritage is Brazilian/Celtic-Iberian through her mother and grandmother. From them she learned folk magics and Craft concepts that included Rules of Conduct, spiritism, herbal spells, candle magics, reincarnation belief, calling upon the Elementals, and working with “The Power.”Ann holds both Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in History and writes from the perspective of her personal experience and family training. Her books are sold internationally in English, Italian, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and Russian. Ann is the author of Green Witchcraft: Folk Magic, Fairy Lore, & Herb Craft, Green Witchcraft II: Balancing Light & Shadow, Green Witchcraft III: The Manual, Green Magic: The Sacred Connection to Nature, Grimoire for the Green Witch: A Complete Book of Shadows, and Tarot for the Green Witch.

To Entice Love

To Entice Love Cover This spell can be used to attract love or to draw a lover closer. It should be
begun on the night of a new moon. Take a salt shaker and a pepper shaker, and
designate one the female and the other the male. Then take a piece of pink
ribbon and tie the female object to one end and the male object to the other,
leaving about a foot of ribbon between them.

Every morning, untie the ribbon, move the objects a little closer together, and
retie the knots. Eventually, the salt and pepper shakers will touch. Leave them
bound together for seven days before untying them. By this time, love should
have entered your life or your current partner should have drawn closer.

All One Wicca

All One Wicca Image

Book: All One Wicca by Kaatryn Macmorgan Douglas

"All One Wicca" - the most important book on Wicca you've never heard of. Created to serve the rapidly growing Universal Eclectic Wiccan audience, All One Wicca was first released for free onto the 'net in 1997. Since then, thousands of adulterated illegal downloads of the document have been distributed, often under the title "book one of Wicca." These copies were usually edited to remove references to the author and her tradition or had materials added from other unlucky authors. Rather than pursue or sue the thieves, AOW's author made a bold decision-let the words sit where they landed and find the people they were meant for. Since then, AOW has become a staple on many Wiccan bookshelves, despite many of its most ardent fans not knowing the source of the material, or even the author's name. Covenstead Press is honored to reprint the first book to mention the concepts of Patron gods, elemental visualization and The Five Points of Wiccan belief in this new edition, revised to the author's original vision. Blackout And Sigils

Blackout And Sigils Cover The blackout or as it is commonly referred to, the death posture, is the
technique that the late Austin Osman Spare refined for his own magical use and
which has been adopted by chaoists, solo and group, world wide as its popularity
has been increased by the works of the IOT over the last decade or so.

The normal procedure, as many will undoubtedly be familiar with, (and this is
only one of its uses) is that a sigil/glyph of desire is held in the mind`s eye
whilst in what we all refer to as the death posture e.g., stood on tiptoe, arms
locked behind the head, body stretched to its limit, deep spasmodic breathing,
until total exhaustion and inevitably one blacks out, the sigil is then lost to
the mind of the inner and the banished of laughter is evoked to prevent the
resurfacing of the said sigil.

Anyone who has used this technique for the above said purpose, will have at
sometime or another experienced, even if just slightly, difficulty in holding
the posture long enough for the desired gnosis to take effect sufficiently for
blackout. And due to this difficulty, a well planned ritual can be a well
planned waste of time as the desired result is not implanted properly.

A technique that has been repeatedly employed by myself on such occasions is
based upon the same principles as the death posture but as I have found, a
little easier and without pitfalls that one can experience with A.O. Spare`s
technique.

This technique is a strange mixture of inhibitory and excitatory gnosis, forced
overbreathing, dancing or spinning, and of course exhaustion. The end result is
of necessity for this process the blackout, which is as we know, of the
inhibitory gnosis. I will now explain how this technique is employed by one for
the insertion of sigils for whatever purpose one feels the need.

First one has to sigilise the desire in any form that one may wish, but in all
cases and especially this one, it must be very easy to visualise. Once that has
been achieved, one may then begin to design the ritual for that particular
purpose in mind. Banishings and invocations may be employed, if so wished, this
is, however, not a necessity for the successful outcome of this process. At the
culmination of the rite the individual starts the overbreathing, panting deeply
and spasmodically and at the same time visualising the sigil as vividly as you
possible can, bright, intense and very clear as the overbreathing continues.
Then when you feel that the time is right, start your spinning round and round,
still overbreathing and still holding your visualised sigil in your mind`s eye.
Music can be played for a background to the dancing, tom toms or any other drum
is rather excellent background sound for this purpose. When the individual has
reached a state of sheer exhaustion, very dizzy, sweating and ready to drop, he
or she then, still spinning and overbreathing and of course holding the
visulised sigil in mind, works their way to the centre of the circle or working
area.

There a partner, either active or passive to the rite, (in other words, if a
solo worker, try to get someone to help you with this part) stops you spinning
and grabs you in a bear hug lifting you off the ground and squeezing you about
the solar plexus, where a large network of nerves lie. At this precise moment
the music, if any has been employed, is stopped, and death-like silence is kept.
The practitioner holds his or her breath whilst being squeezed and the sigil is
visualised as if burning with bright, white heat as its image is burnt into your
mind. Within seconds the blackout will occur and the sigil is lost to the mind.
At this point it is important that your partner lets you drop to the floor,
unless that is you wish to return to primal chaos!

On coming round, in most cases, you should evoke laughter to banish the sigil
and all thoughts thereof, your laughter breaks that silence and the rite is
finished in whatever manner wished.

With fractalic greetings and laughter * Fra.: Apfelmann *

A Witchs Guide To Faery Folk How To Work With The Elemental World

A Witchs Guide To Faery Folk How To Work With The Elemental World Cover

Book: A Witchs Guide To Faery Folk How To Work With The Elemental World by Edain Mccoy

Working on the idea that faeries are not merely mythological creatures or elemental archetypes, but actual beings who can aid in pagan rituals and magic, McCoy tells the reader where to find them, how to call them (or protect against them), spells and rituals involving the little people and a rather helpful dictionary of faery folk from around the world. I'm impressed with the amount of actually helpful Information which McCoy has included in this book.

Work magick with help from the little people. All over the world, people have reported encounters with a race of tiny people who are neither human nor deity. This book reclaims that lost, rich heritage of working with faery folk that our Pagan ancestors took for granted. Edain McCoy teaches how to work with faeries in a mutually beneficial way. Practice rituals and spells in which faeries can participate, and discover tips to help facilitate faery contact. These capricious creatures can help with divination, past life recall, scrying, and spiritual quests. Also included is a dictionary of more than 230 faeries that include goblins, gnomes, elementals, seasonal faeries, and angels.

Section one explains the nature of fairies, the fairie Experience aroung the globe, how and where to find them, how to protect yourself from the bad ones and a "guided Meditation to fairyland". Section two has ideas on spells and rituals for you and the little people and how to create your own fairy beings and section three is a dictionary of the "Fairies of the world". It is REALLY a great book! The descriptions are so detailed! I just opened up to a page and scanned in one of the descriptions of a fairy: Alven - Land of Origin: Netherlands. Other Origins: None known. Other Names: Ottermaaner. Element: Water. Appearance and Temperament: Alvens have bodies thatlight as to make them almost invisible. They are not winged but they can travel through the air by becoming encased in a water bubble. Occasionally they will show themselves while wearing the skins of otters. Their malice towards humans extends only to who choose to desecrate their homes and sacred plants. Time Most Active: At night. Lore: Alvens are creatures of the moon under whose light they dance and play. They are water faeries who live in ponds, lakes and rivers, but the River Elbe is sacred to them and in it they make principal home. They cherish night-blooming plants and will harm any human who attempts to pick or destroy them. Fish are their only known enemies, and they prefer to live in water enclosures there are none. Where to Find Them: In the River Elbe, an easy journey on the inner plane. How to Contact: Look for them in Faeryland and try approaching them as a friend, someone who also loves the moon and nature. Magickal and Ritual Help: Undetermined, but they may be useful in protective and healing spells for a night-blooming garden or for the marine environment. That is just an example of one type...a few other names: Ballybogs, Baraboas, Brownies, Coblynau, Domoviyr, Elle Maids, Fireesin, Gnomes, Gremlins, Hobgoblins, Jack Frost, Knockers, Lesidhe, Lorelei, Merrows, Nokke, Oakmen, Pixies, Portunes, Saleerandees, Spunkies, Twlwwyth Tegs, Undines, Wag-by-the-way, Zips... the list goes on! There is a great resource guide in the back and suggestions for making up stories, etc...

Memory Rite

Memory Rite Cover This rite is good for anyone, even those who assume they have had perfect
childhoods. You don't always realize the past is dragging you down until it's
too late and you would be amazed by what you can find out about yourself.

You will need:

Yellow candles
Kamea of sol
A box of any shape or size
A solar incense
And music of a childlike nature to enhance the atmosphere

Preparation:

The box should have a lid. Paint the inside glossy black, or line it with an
irregular reflective surface such as aluminum foil. The outside should be
decorated with any drawing, pictures or whatever one may want to help evoke a
childlike state of mind and help trigger childhood memories.

Start with an opening of any sort you feel comfortable with. Light candles and
incense as desired.

State the intent "It is my will to greet my past and accept it for what it is".

Recite the invocation:

I call the past to meet the present,
That the future may be bright.
I bring myself forth from the dark,
And hold me to the light.
Let not the past control my present,
Let not my future be dark as night.
I meet and greet my with open arms,
And move back into the light.

At this point, one person sits in the center of the group with their box,
keeping it closed. She focuses on the box while the rest of the participants
circle around, teasing, insulting, degrading her. At this point, the teasing
should not be too personal. When she reaches gnosis, she opens the box and gazes
inside, seeing whatever she sees. Now the taunting should reach a more personal
and vicious attitude. This continues until they close their box again.

The box then is dealt with in whatever manner she sees fit. It can be destroyed,
left open in a spot of sunlight, or kept for future uses as it may be a good
idea to do this more then once.

When the first person is finished, another takes her place until the entire
group has a turn.

Banish with laughter and embraces.

Protection From Beyond

Protection From Beyond Cover
Romany spiritual traditions combine a dislike of disturbing the dead with a desire for the protective capacities cemetery dirt offers. Although one might not want to disturb one's own ancestors or someone one knows, there's no actual fear of the cemetery, thus an anonymous, unknown grave is chosen.

This spell harnesses abstract, protective qualities inherent in graveyard dirt to protect a child embarking on a long journey. Here's how:

* The parent takes a little dirt from any grave, balancing it on the back of the left hand.
* When the departing child isn't looking, this dirt is tossed over his or her head to provide protection.
