Garden Witchery Magick From The Ground Up

Garden Witchery Magick From The Ground Up Cover

Book: Garden Witchery Magick From The Ground Up by Ellen Dugan

Adult/High School-With good-humored flair, Dugan offers a practical introduction to gardening that incorporates an eclectic blend of Wiccan and magical traditions. The author encourages readers to work hard to make the garden "a place where both our metaphysical and ordinary lives begin to thrive together." Outlining Basic Principles such as working with the directions and the elements, moon phases, and color, the author shows how this lore, rooted in a respect for nature, also forms the basis of good gardening practice. She offers succinct and useful information on a great variety of topics such as astrology, fairies, herbal spells and charms, crafts, and journaling, and on dealing with an equal variety of garden situations and types. Throughout, she suggests excellent sources for further information, including the Extension Service, the Poison Control Center, and the public library, and she offers an extensive bibliography (mostly of magic literature). The good advice and sound horticultural practice found here can help novices and/or budding garden witches to discover their own style and get off to a solid start, and can also enrich the experience of those who are already knowledgeable.

Written with down-to-earth humor by a Master Gardener who is also a practicing witch, this creative and encouraging guide will inspire gardeners of all ages and experience levels. It includes a journal section that makes it easy to keep track of your progress, practical gardening advice, personal stories, and garden witchery lore and magick. Inside, you'll get the dirt on:

- flower folklore
- moon gardening and astrological timing
- faerie magick
- beginning to advanced witchcraft
- floral and herbal spells
- Sabbat celebrations
- "witch crafts" (sachets, wreaths, charm bags)
- creating sacred space
- shade, moonlight, and sun gardens
- enchanted houseplant and container gardens
- magickal herbal correspondences
- garden blessings

This book was a very refreshing escape from all the 101 books out there, although, I could see it being enjoyed by Witches and non Witches alike. All that is required is a love of nature, and an open mind. It seamlessly combines practical gardening informtion with magickal advice on when to plant, gardening with the cycles of the earth and moon, how to invite blessings into the garden, and more. Ellen Dugans warm and friendly writing style makes this book a joy to read and I even found myself snickering out loud at points. Mrs. Dugan even shares with us information about the language of flowers that she unearthed in a book from 1845! It is a treasure trove of Natural Magick, including Practical Spells, and Garden Witch crafts like dream pillows and charm bags.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Magick or gardening. I am now planning new additions to my gardens for the spring based on suggestions in Garden Witchery.

Spell To Ward Off Drunkeness

Spell To Ward Off Drunkeness Cover
Here is an old old Ukrainian spell. Say this charm to ward off drunkeness" Hops and Vine, take leave of Ivan, take yee to dark woods, where no body roams, no steed stirs and no birds alights. Hops and Vine, take yee to a fleet running stream, on which no body rows. Take leave of Ivan and wend your way by tempestuous winds, go yee hither by wind. Attach yourself to an evil one, who thinks evil thoughts of Ivan, to him that does no good attach yee - yet rid me of thy ills forever more.

NOTE:

East Slavic spells and charms vary according to their purpose, but all are subject to certain rules in casting them. For starters, they must be whispered or at least said so that no one else hears them. The person casting the spell must have all of his teeth so that the force of his words is not lost. He also cannot smoke or drink, but must have a clean body and strong will. Nor can he charm or curse someone for money. And there is no room for improvisation - neither additions nor subtractions from the original text. If it's a nasty spell, it must be cast on black days (Monday or Friday). If it's a nice one - Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. But the real strength of the remedy or curse lies in the power of the thoughts of the one who invokes it.

Different Types Of Spells

Different Types Of Spells Image
Given below is a brief on the different types of spells such as wiccan spell, witchcraft spells, druid spells, warlock spells, witch spells, shaman spells, paladin spellsWiccan Spells

Wiccans are practitioners of a form of witchcraft known as Wicca. It is a Neopagan religion. Wiccans practice many rituals including casting Wiccan spells. Healing Wiccan spells are very popular and most of the Wiccan spells are designed to help people. The belief system of the Wiccan followers does not permit the Wiccans to practice Wiccan spells that harm people. Laying of curses as practiced by some Wiccans are actually forbidden by their law.Witchcraft Spells

The craft that uses supernatural powers to harm others by witches is traditionally called witchcraft and witches are often linked to the Devil. However there are good witches too and witchcraft spells are the spells that these witches practice. A Witchcraft spell can be a group of words, a ritual action or verse. There were many methods of casting a Witchcraft spell such as binding or immolation of a clay or wax image of the target person to cause harm to him, performing rituals, using amulets or potions of herbs etc.
Druid Spells

Druids belonged to a class priests in some parts of Europe including Britain as early as the Stone Age. Mention of druids and their powers and influence on royal families are found in Roman history. According to Irish documents, druids were sorcerers possessed powers to perform divination. They could cast Druid spells to turn humans into stones and animals and destroy crops.
Warlock Spells

Warlocks are known to be a class of highly feared spell casters, having mastered the arts of demons. They were experts in cursing, warlock spells and could fire bolts of shadow and fire and in battles and combats and could get the demons to help them. They could also help their allies in healing by using powerful warlock spells. They used ritual magic to create health stones with power to heal. With their powerful warlock spells one can cause destruction and havoc as well as help people.
Witch Spells

Witches like Wiccans also practice witchcraft, but unlike Wiccans, who belong to the pagan religion, a witch can be anyone, male or female, not necessarily belonging to any faith or religion. They can cast magic witch spells for love, money, relationships and so on. Most common witch spells are: witch Spells for healing, fertility, jobs and psychics.
Shaman Spells

Shamans are those who practice Shamanism which is a term used to refer to certain beliefs and practices with regards to the world of spirits. Shaman spells include the use of fire and lightning to cause damage, summoning spirit wolves to aid in battles, restoration Shaman spells to heal, Cleanse Spirit Shaman spell for removing curses and the Heroism Shaman spell to boost the entire groups morale and healing.
Paladin spells

Paladins are believed to be God's warrior who protects friends from danger. Paladin spells can heal, deal with damage in the case of a melee, and paladins have access to the unique paladin spell of invulnerability called the Divine Shield.

Lend your power unto the spell,
And work our will by magic rite!

By all the might of moon and sun

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Definitions

The mare in nightmare is not a female horse, but a mara, an Anglo-Saxon and Old
Norse term for a spirit that sat on sleepers' chests, causing them to have bad
dreams.

Such a mare-induced bad dream is called a nightmare in English, a mareridt in
Danish, a couchmar in French, and an Alpdruck or Alptraum in German.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Charm to Control the Night-Mare

S. George, S. George, our ladies knight,
He walkt by daie, so did he by night.
Untill such time as he her found,
He hir beat and he hir bound,
Untill hir troth she to him plight,
She would not come to him that night.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nightmare Charm or Spell against the Mara

Pulling from my head the longest hair it possessed, and then going through the
pantomime of binding a refractory animal, the nurse slowly chanted this spell:
De man o' meicht
He rod a' neicht
We nedder swird
Nor faerd nor leicht,
He socht da mare,
He fand da mare,
He band da mare
Wi' his ain hair,
An' made her swear
By midder's meicht,
Dat sh" wad never bide a neicht
What he had rod, dat man o' meicht.

There are different versions of this incantation, and I [Mrs. Saxby] forget
which it was that the old nurse used on the occasion mentioned. Therefore I
have given the one which is most familiar to me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Shetland Charm

Arthur Knight
He rade a' night,
Wi' open swird
An' candle light.
He sought da mare;
He fan' da mare;
He bund da mare
Wi' her ain hair.
And made da mare
Ta swear:
'At she should never
Bide a' night
Whar ever she heard
O' Arthur Knight.

THE ALP

The alp is a demonic being which presses upon sleeping people so that they
cannot utter a sound. These attacks are called Alpdracke (nightmares).

A girl told how the alp came to her through a keyhole. She was not able to call
for help. Later, she therefore asked her sister to call out her name in the
night, and then the alp would go back out through the keyhole.

In Zwickau they claim that the alp will go away if one invites him for coffee
the following morning.

It is also believed that the alp crushes animals to death. For example, if
young geese, are placed in a pig pen and then die it is said that the alp
crushed them to death. If rabbits die, and it appears that they have been
crushed, a broom is placed in their pen, which protects them against the alp.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vanlandi, King of Sweden, and Huld, the Witch Woman

Svegdir's son was named Vanlandi, and he took the kingdom after him and ruled
over the Wealth of Uppsala. He was a great warrior and went far over the land.
He had stayed one winter in Finland with Sn> the Old, and there married his
daughter Driva. In the spring he went away, whilst Driva stayed behind, and he
promised to come back after three winters, but he came not for ten winters.

Then Driva had Huld the witch woman called to her, and sent Visbur, hers and
Vanlandi's son, to Sweden. Driva paid Huld the witch woman to draw Vanlandi to
Finland with sorcery or else to kill him. When the spell was being furthered,
Vanlandi was in Uppsala, and he had a longing to go to Finland, but his friends
and advisers forbade him, and said that it certainly was Finnish witchcraft
which caused his wanderlust. Then he became sleepy and said that the Mare was
treading on him. His men sprang up and would help him, but when they came to
his head she trod on his feet, so that they were nigh broken; then they resorted
to the feet, but then she smothered the head, so that he died there. The Swedes
took his body and burned it near a river which was called Skuta; there was his
standing-stone set up. Thus says Tjodolv:

But on the way
To Vili's brother
Evil wights
Bore Vanlandi;
Then there trod
The troll-wise
Sorceress
On the warrior lord.
And there was burned
On the Skuta bank
That generous man
Whom the Mare killed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beliefs Concerning Alps and Mares

It is believed that by stopping up the keyhole, placing one's shoes with the
toes facing the door, and then getting into bed backwards one can protect
oneself against nightmares or "Mortriden." [mare rides].

Further, one can put something made from steel, for example an old pair of
scissors, in one's bed straw.

A person suffering from nightmares should urinate into a clean, new bottle, hang
the bottle in the sun for three days, carry it -- without saying a word -- to a
running stream, and then throw it over one's head into the stream.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Mirt

The name most often found in northern Germany ends with a pronounced "t," and
can be grammatically either masculine or feminine. The compound "nightmirt" is
also very common. The forms "mir" (masculine) and "mire" (feminine) also exist.
The designation "alp" is recognized as well.

All of these names are used to designate the spirit being that sits upon a
sleeping person's chest, thus depriving him of motion and speech. The
approaching being sounds like the gnawing of a mouse or the quiet creeping of a
cat. The m†rt can be captured by grasping it with an inherited glove or by
closing up all of the room's openings as soon as the sleeping person begins to
groan.

Mirt-pressure (also called a mirt-ride) can be prevented by crossing one's arms
and legs before falling asleep.

In the Oldenburg district, in Saterland, and in East Friesland, the alp is
called "wiridЉrske" or "w„ridЉrske."

In the vicinity of Wendisch-Buchholz the same being is called the "Murraue." The
fear that it causes the sleeping person does not cease until it gets light in
the room.

Some pine trees have twigs that grow together in curls until they look almost
like nests. During a rain storm, one must be careful to not stand beneath such
a twig, because if rain drops fall on a person from such a nest, the murraue
will surely sit on him during the night.

A person whose eyebrows grow together is called a murraue.

A murraue can be either a man or a woman, but only a person born on Sunday. If
they are pressing against you, you should say that you want to give them
something, then they will come the next day to get it. Braunsdorf near
Forstenwald.

The murraue creeps up a sleeping person's body from below. First you feel her
weight on your feet, next on your stomach, and finally on your chest, and then
you cannot move a muscle. However, if you think that you know who she is, you
must call her by name as soon as you perceive her, and she will have to retreat.
Teupitz.

If a mirt is pressing against you, and you presume that it is an acquaintance,
you need only call him by name, and he will have to appear in his physical form.
Once a m†rt was pressing against a man. He called out the name of his beloved,
and in an instant she was standing before him. From Elm.

It helps to prevent being ridden by a nightmirt when in the evening one places
one's shoes next to the bed with the toes pointing outward. Varneitze near
Winsen on the Aller.

If there are seven boys or seven girls in one family, then one of them will be a
night-mare, but will know nothing about it. Moorhausmoor.

On the island of Baltrum the male mare is called "wilroder" and the female mare
is called "rittmeije."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baku, Eater of Dreams

In Japan, among Superstitious people, evil dreams are believed to be the result
of evil spirits, and the Supernatural creature called Baku is known as Eater of
Dreams.

The Baku, like so many mythological beings, is a curious mingling of various
animals. It has the face of a lion, the body of a horse, the tail of a cow, the
forelock of a rhinoceros, and the feet of a tiger.

Several evil dreams are mentioned in an old Japanese book, such as two snakes
twined together, a fox with the voice of a man, blood-stained garments, a
talking rice-pot, and so on.

When a Japanese peasant awakens from an evil nightmare, he cries: "Devour, O
Baku! devour my evil dream." At one time pictures of the Baku were hung up in
Japanese houses and its name written upon pillows. It was believed that if the
Baku could be induced to eat a horrible dream, the creature had the power to
change it into good fortune

The Complete Book Of Incense Oils And Brews

The Complete Book Of Incense Oils And Brews Cover

Book: The Complete Book Of Incense Oils And Brews by Scott Cunningham

This is one of my favorite books by Scott Cunningham. He explores so many different methods of magickal creation that there is something for everyone and more. Scott Cunningham's contributions to the occult make him one of the most important spiritual people of the last century. His books on Wicca have gently, lovingly, and thoroughly introduced more people to Witchcraft than just about anyone else.
But while Wicca was his Spiritual Path, it was natural magic that revealed his deep understanding and broad knowledge of herbs and their magical powers. His books on these subjects have become the de facto sources for all sorts of magical people. Already, The Complete Book of Incense, Oils & Brews (an expanded and rewritten version of The Magic of Incenses, Oils and Brews) is owned by over 150,00 readers. You should own it, too.

One of the secrets of real magic is that it is controlled by the mind. The more things in your ritual to help your mind associate with your goal, the more powerful your ritual may be. Colored candles, scented oils, natural incenses, and more all add to the impact of the magic you wish to do. But how do you know which incense to burn? Is it possible to add scented oils together to get a more powerful oil? And how do you make your own, appropriately-scented tools? The answers to questions like these and hundreds more can be found in The Complete Book of Incense, Oils & Brews by world-famous author Scott Cunningham. This is a greatly expanded and rewritten version of The Magic of Incenses, Oils and Brews. It includes over 100 new formulas, proportions for each element of the recipes (the most requested feature from his previous book), how to substitute ingredients, and much more. Besides the formulas, it also includes the exact methods of making all of these scented tools, including how to extract the essences from the herbs.

Today, there are two major trends in magic: natural and ceremonial. They have different methodologies to get the same results. Neither is better, they are just different. The "best" one is whatever you can successfully use. But there is an interesting thing about these two systems: They both use incenses; they both use scented oils; they both use scented baths and magical teas. That makes this book applicable to any system of magic you may follow!

Besides giving the formulas for hundreds of the scented magical tools, Scott also reveals how you can easily make substitutions in the formulas. In this way, even if you are out of a particular herb to use as you compound your own incenses, oils, powders, and so forth, you will still be able to make magic.
Yes, you will find recipes for scents to use when doing magic for initiations, love, exorcisms, money, health, talismans, elemental energies, astrological energies and for many of the goddesses and gods. But by studying this book you will be able to develop your own, unique recipes and formulas. You will understand how these herbs really work.
And that, my friends, is real magic!

Each one of the formulas is precise and easy to make. Do you need luck? Take 2 parts vetivert, 2 parts allspice, 1 part nutmeg, and 1 part calamus, grind them together as finely as possible, then sprinkle the powder in a circle around you, beginning and ending in the East and moving clockwise. Sit within this circle and absorb the powder's energies. Also included are other ways to use magical powders that will have you coming up with your own ideas for them, too. There is a legion of recipes for incenses. There are three for the sun and two for consecrating talismans. There are incenses for each of the astrological signs and ones to help you study better and gain success. You'll also find incenses for each of the planetary influences. There are four for Saturn alone! This compendium of magical lore is a vital tool for every magical person on any magical path, whether you are a beginner or an expert.

If you want to learn more about making your own incense, brews, potions, powders, inks, soaps, tinctures, oils, herbal baths, etc., YOU MUST BUY THIS BOOK. Each section is informative and full of recipies, explanations, suggestions, and warnings. The chapter on substitution is excellent and the charts and appendixes are helpful as well. The book's tone is more instructional rather than spiritual, especially compared to Cunningham's other books. If you are looking for in-depth information about magical herbs and oils, I highly recommend reading Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs and The Magic of Aromatherapy in addition to The Complete Book of Incense, Oils, and Brews.

Power be bound,
Light revealed,
Now be sealed.

Release the powers and open the circle. Bury the poppet at the time of the waning moon, far from your home, under a heavy rock. Go home and have some juice and do grounding. And clearing meditation.

A charm to bind an enemy:

Gather cobwebs from your house. Place them all a tangle upon a black cloth. Procure then a fly, recently dead, and set it down upon the mass of webs. These words should then be written down on paper:

"North, South, East, West
Spider's web shall bind him best
East, West, North, South
Hold his limbs and stop his mouth
Seal his eyes and choke his breath
Wrap him round with ropes of death.
"

Fold the paper 4 times and wrap it, the fly and webs in the black cloth, forming a small bag. This should then be bound up with the end of a long cord and suspended from a hook in a dark corner of the home. Do not disturb it, but let it hang until it is thickly covered in dust. Then take down and bury it in the earth to work its influence in perpetual secrecy.

Spells For St Agnes

Spells For St Agnes Cover
Here we have a variety of old old spells for St Agnes night which is pretty much dedicated to finding a husband.

On Saint Agnes' night, 21st January, take a row of pins and pull out every one, one after another, saying a Pater Noster, sticking a pin in your sleeve, and you will dream of him or her you will marry. Knit tne left garter about the right-legg'd stocking (let the other garter and stocking alone), and as you rehearse these following verses, at every comma knit a knot:

"This knot I knit,

To know the thing I know not yet,

That I may see

The man that shall my husband be,

How he goes and what he wears.

And what he does all the days.
"

Accordingly in your dream you will see him, if a musician, with a lute or other instrument; if a scholar, with a book," and so on.

Another dream-charm for St. Agnes' Eve was to take a sprig of rosemary and another of thyme and sprinkle them thrice with water, then place one in each shoe, and stand shoe and sprig on either side of the bed, repeating:

"St Agnes, that's to lovers kind.

Come ease the trouble of my mind.
"

In many places the notion prevailed that to insure the perfection of these charms the day must be spent in fasting. It was called "St. Agnes' fast."

Keat's beautiful lines commemorative of the day seem doubly exquisite when read after conning the clumsy folk-rhymes:

" They told me how upon St. Agnes' Eve " virgins might have visions of delight, " soft adorings from their loves receive " the hony'd middle of the night. " ceremonies due they did aright; " supperless to bed they must retire " couch supine their beauties lily white; " look behind, nor sideways, but require

Of heaven with upward eyes for all that they desire.

In Scotland the lasses sow grain at midnight on St. Agnes Eve, singing,-

" "Agnes sweet and Agnes fair ", hither now repair. " Agnes, let me see " lad who is to marry me."

And the figure of the future sweetheart appears as if reaping the grain.

Here is yet another one:

A key is placed in the Bible at the second chapter of Solomon's Song, verses 1, 5 and 17, and the book tied firmly together, with the handle of the key left beyond the edges of the leaves. The tips of the little finger of the charm-tester and of a friend are placed under the side of the key, and then they "tried the alphabet" with the verses above named; that is, they began thus:

"A. My beloved is mine, and I am his. He feedeth among the lilies. Until the day break and the shadows fall away, turn, my beloved," etc.

At the word "turn" the Bible was supposed to turn around if A were the first letter of the lover's name. Thus could the entire name be spelt out.
