In this urban day & age, as much as we would like to always hold our ceremonies outside, this just isn't possible. Weather, time of day, & living quarters all play a part in deciding where we are able to have our rites. Now days, many people (myself included) live in town in an apartment building. Both space & neighbors can be a problem in this setting. Even though the Burning Times are behind us, our religion is still not accepted by many people. For this, & many other personal reasons, some of us choose to erect only temporary sacred spaces. Here are some easy ways to create a truly sacred space in what is normally your bedroom, living room, or whatever...

First, for people who are comfortable working in almost any setting, try taking stones, crystals, etc. & using them as your circle boundaries. You could cast your circle as you place the stones. When you place the eastern stone, call the powers of that quarter & so on.

For Witches who like to change the atmosphere a little more, try buying or making a circle cloth. this is a circular piece of material, in a size that is comfortable for you, that is your magickal circle. You simply take it out, lay it down & energize like you would with any other casting. Perform your rites, & when you are finished, your entire circle folds neatly for easy storage.

This circle cloth can be anywhere from simple to elaborate. Buy a piece of material that you like, & cut out a circle. Cut the circle to the diameter of circle that you normally cast for your workings, be it three, four, or six feet. Most importantly make the diameter of your cloth a size that you are comfortable with. It can be left as simple as that, or you could decorate your cloth with power symbols, runes, astrological symbols, or whatever you choose. Just stitch, paint, draw, or glue on the symbols you want.

For those Witches with no craft talent whatsoever, go to your local store & find the tablecloth section. One of the sizes is a 72-inch round. This just happens to be a six foot circle. once again, either pick a color pattern you like or leave the cloth plain or decorate to suit your tradition.

Stick two silver pins through the middle of a red candle at midnight.
Concentrate on your lover and repeatedly chant his or her name out loud. When

Take four black candles and put them at each of the cardinal points of your
house. Next to each candle put a piece of onyx or lodestone or a piece of
magnetized iron. Light the four candles and see them sucking up all the negative
energy in the house and channeling it back into the earth through the stones.

Next take a stick of incense (frankincense or sandalwood is best) and draw a
Banishing Pentagram of Earth at each window, wall, door and corner of your
house. (To draw a banishing pentagram of Earth: start at lower left then up to
top then down to right then across to upper left point and back to upper right
point and finish at lower left point.) Visualize the negative energy being
pushed beyond the pentagram and locked outside as you complete it. After the
candles have burned a bit and you feel that the have absorbed the negative
energies bury them outside around the house (in the four Directions). Leave the
stones where they are, and visualize them as a spiritual electric fence that
keeps the negative energy or pesky spirits from coming back in.

THE MAGIC MONEY JAR SPELL

When March winds blow, and skies are bleak
And your checking account looks like welfare week
Go to your kitchen with a dash
Find a jar to bring some cash.

Get a tea bag, mint for sure
Brew a cup, you need no more.
In your little witches pot,
Add vervain, not a lot.

In goes dragons' blood and cinquefoil
Bring it all to a rolling boil.
Mix ingredients, stir it thrice
Cut the heat, throw in some ice.

On paper virgin, write your need
Be specific, ignore the greed.
Put the paper in the jar
To bring in riches from afar.

Call the Fates, yes all three
Ask them for prosperity
Here's the chant, it's easy now
Take your time to give it pow.

Three great ladies crossed the land
Each held prosperity in their hand
The first said, "She needs some."
The second said, "She has some."
The third said, "There is more to come."
"We turn three times, the way of the Sun."

Raise your energy, clap three times
Then seal the brew with a magical sign.
When it cools, pour in the jar
Close it tight, mark with a star.
A minor magic, I call this
To bring you monetary bliss
For extra punch, choose a planetary hour
Full Moon's good, for extra power.

When money comes, thank the Gods
Pour the content on the sod
Return in like the gifts you got
And remember all the blessings brought.

Water Gazing

In order to obtain the power of water you, logically, need to be near some. Find
any body of water that the sun's reflection can be found in and sit down on any
comfortable area. It is very important to relax yourself and try to get all
other images out of your head. Once you have done so, close your eyes but only
enough so that you can still see the water. If you are asking about a specific
object or person, get an image of them in your head then let the image dissolve;
see what comes into your mind after that. If you have no specific questions,
just relax your eyelids and see what images appear before you. This ability may
take awhile to master but once you have it, it will never leave you.

*please note that the sun's rays are very strong so if the reflection is too
bright for your eyes, wait for the sun to go down a bit so the reflections are
not as strong.

A Spell For Money

During a waxing moon, take a dish of water and wait for the rays of the moon to
be present on the top of the water. Once this occurs, dip your hands into the
water. Money should come to you in 28 days.

Pond Magic

Ask the water a yes or no question and throw a pebble into the water. If you
count an odd number of ripples, the answer is yes, if the number is even it is
no.

This is how I practice Norse Heathenism/Asatru for the major blotar (rituals). These are normally group rituals. Calendars vary for different groups. Gamlinginn published a list of these some years back; I don't believe I still have it. Many use a modified 8-spoked wiccan Wheel of the Year. Others have monthly rituals. This article describes how to prepare your ritual area before a ritual. Before I begin theh article, though, let me issue a few disclaimers. The first one is that I do not, in any way, mean to imply that what I set forth here is the only way to do things. It is one way, and it's worked for me, and if you think my methods seem reasonable and fit within your framework of Wicca, then use them, if not, ignore them.

The second disclaimer is actually just a clarification of my background. I was trained in traditional (small 'T', as in Alexandrian, Gardnerian, and so on) Wicca. My methods might seem a little too ceremonial for some of the more eclectic Wiccans, and might seem totally unnecessary by the more spontaneous type of ritual participation. Fine. Then don't use them!
