Charms, Spells & Formulas is an excellent Introductory book for those who follow paths other than Wicca. In fact, I think that it is better suited for those who are interested in voodoo or some variant thereof. The one thing that I did not like about this book is that I wanted it to be longer! There is a wide variety of information and I feel that Ray Malbrough did an excellent job touching base on so many different topics. It contains associations on colors, herbs, candles, and more. It goes into a little detail about voodoo practices and the blending in of Catholicism. I highly suggest that readers who enjoyed this book check out Malbrough's "The Magical Power of the Saints," which goes into greater detail on the Saints than what was briefly touched upon in this book, along with explaining novenas and the 7 day candles. As a non-Wiccan Witch that practices the style of magic as presented in these books, I feel that both are excellent and are ones that I continually refer to.

"charms spells and Formulas" contains recipes that really helped me in my life. At the time, I was recently divorced and was in need of a part-time job to make ends meet. Symptoms of a voodoo spell can vary in intensity and frequency, depending on the spell caster's skill and the person being bewitched. While there are many who doubt the existence of black magic, some suddenly realize they may be suffering from symptoms of a voodoo spell.

Voodoo is a faith that is a combination of Roman Catholicism and the tribal spiritualism of West Africa. When the slaves (primarily in Haiti) were taught Christianity, it blended with their own spiritualism and became what's known as voodoo. While a complicated faith to an outsider, voodoo can be learned and understood. Additionally, the inherent magic of voodoo can also be performed if a person learns it.

How to Learn Voodoo Magic

1. Step 1

Learn about voodoo as a religion and faith. Voodoo is a religion first and a form of magic second. One cannot practice the magic until they learn about the spirits, called the Loa, who grant this power and aid.

2. Step 2

Find an experienced teacher, if possible. Voodoo is like any other faith; you can read all the books that you want, but in the end you should speak with other practitioners about it to learn from their experience.

3. Step 3

Design a ritual. Voodoo, like any other faith, is symbolic. However, that doesn't mean that voodoo spells are created like a recipe. There isn't a "speak these words, perform this action" sort of formula to voodoo magic. Rituals represent a spell, and they should be unique to each person. For instance, a love spell could call out to a certain Loa for help, and while you speak a poem that you wrote yourself, you could light red candles to represent love and power. You could also keep a photograph of the person you love on the altar as you ask for the Loa's help. Each "spell" should be unique, and crafted to the needs of the caster and the unique situation they need help in.

Tips & Warnings

* Be realistic in your expectations. Voodoo won't be a quick fix to your problems if you aren't willing to solve them from a spiritual and a reality-based perspective.
* Avoid internet sites or mass media books that claim they can teach "voodoo spells" that will make you rich, powerful and attractive. At best these spells are fluff, and at worst they could make you seem like an unbeliever, ruining your chances of getting actual help.

We all feel vulnerable at times. A protection spell can empower you. Whether it is the negative energies of others or fear for your property, you are not helpless. You can build a field of energy that will keep destructive forces away. Read on to learn how to perform protection spells.

Instructions

1.Identify your fears. The kind of protection you need will influence the spell you perform. Mentally destructive forces need to be handled differently from physical threats.

2.Describe the ownership history of your home, if that's what you want to protect. Pay attention to the feelings you get when you write about previous owners. The energies they have left behind could be what's making you feel uncomfortable.

3.Meditate on the person who is causing you grief if you are performing the spell for protection against someone. Write a letter addressing that person and explaining why you feel vulnerable.

4.Buy a black and white candle. Light it in a place in your home where you feel safe. Imagine a thick field of white energy surrounding you. Call up that protective field of energy when you feel threatened.

5.Pour hot water over a 1 tsp. of basil. Let it sit for half an hour. Run a warm bath and add the basil water. Relax and envision yourself moving through life confident and brave.

6.Eat more protein like chicken, beans, cheese and tofu when feeling vulnerable to help ground you. Spicy dishes with garlic, onions, black pepper and cayenne keep negative energies away. Eat while visualizing that you are protected from threatening forces.

7.Perform a simple protection spell for your home by burning sage in a censer. Walk through every room in your house, including the attic, basement and garage, chanting words that empower you.

* When using incantations, say positive words that empower you rather than negative words against someone or something.

This is simple magic protection spell for the protection of a room, household or other physical location against negative energies or bad spirits.

How to cast it:

1.Cast a Witch's Circle. If you use a besom for this, sweep the entire area that you wish to protect.

2.Asperse (sprinkle with purified water) the area that you are protecting. Pay special attention to any doors, windows or corners.

3.Cast the sea salt around the edges of the area. You need not be heavy-handed, just a few salt crystals per foot is quite sufficient.

4.Light the incense and allow it to burn for a few moments before continuing. Many denominations of witchcraft begin chanting or prayers at this point.

5.Use the fan or feather to cense (direct smoke towards) the entire area. Work clockwise (doesil) and wave the fan through the smoke to send it outwards. As with the water, pay special attention to doors, windows and corners. Finish your chants and invoke any deities or energies whose blessing you desire upon the protected area. Finish with your normal ritual and close the circle.

The book of shadows (BOS) is used to store information you'll need in your magical tradition. Many Pagans and wiccans feel a BOS should be handwritten, but some use a computer to store information as well. Bear in mind that a BOS is considered a sacred tool, which means it is an item of power that should be consecrated with all of your other magical tools. Copy spells and rituals into your BOS by hand – this will not only transfer energy to the writer, but it also helps you to memorize the contents. Make sure you write legibly enough that you’ll be able to read your notes during a ritual!

Here's How:

1.To make your Book of Shadows, begin with a blank notebook. A popular method is to use a three-ring binder so items can be added and rearranged as needed. If you use this style of BOS, you can use sheet protectors as well, which is great for preventing candle wax and other ritual drippings from getting on the pages! Whatever you select, your title page should include your name. Make it fancy or simple, depending on your preference, but remember that the BOS is a magical object and should be treated accordingly. Many witches simply write, “The Book of Shadows of [your name]” on the front page.

2.What format should you use? Some witches are known to create elaborate Books of Shadows in secret, magical alphabets. Unless you’re fluent enough in one of these systems that you can read it without having to check notes or a chart, stick with your native language. While a spell looks beautiful written out in flowing Elvish script or Klingon lettering, the fact is that it’s just hard to read unless you’re an Elf or a Klingon.

When it comes to the contents of your personal BOS, there are a few sections that are nearly universally included.

3.Laws of your coven or tradition: Believe it or not, magic has rules. While they may vary from group to group, it’s a really good idea to keep them at the front of your BOS as a reminder of what constitutes acceptable behavior and what doesn’t. If you’re part of an eclectic tradition that doesn’t have written rules, or if you’re a solitary witch, this is a good place to write down what YOU think are acceptable rules of magic. After all, if you don’t set yourself some guidelines, how will you know when you’ve crossed over them? This may include a variation on the wiccan Rede, or some similar concept.

4.A dedication: If you’ve been initiated into a coven, you may want to include a copy of your initiation ceremony here. However, many Wiccans dedicate themselves to a God or Goddess long before they become part of a coven. This is a good place to write out who you are dedicating yourself to, and why. This can be a lengthy essay, or it can be as simple as saying, “I, Willow, dedicate myself to the Goddess today, June 21, 2007.”

5.Gods and Goddesses: Depending on what pantheon or tradition you follow, you may have a single God and Goddess, or a number of them. Your BOS is a good place to keep legends and myths and even artwork concerning your Deity. If your practice is an eclectic blend of different spiritual paths, it’s a good idea to include that here.

6.Correspondence tables: When it comes to spellcasting, correspondence tables are some of your most important tools. Phases of the moon, herbs, stones and crystals, colors – all have different meanings and purposes. Keeping a chart of some sort in your BOS guarantees that this information will be at the ready when you really need it. If you have access to a good almanac, it’s not a bad idea to record a years’ worth of moon phases by date in your BOS.

7.Sabbat rituals: The Wheel of the Year includes eight holidays for most Wiccans and Pagans, although some traditions do not celebrate all of them. Your BOS can include rituals for each of the Sabbats. For example, for Samhain you may wish to create a rite that honors your ancestors and celebrates the end of the harvest, while for Yule you may want to write down a celebration of the winter Solstice. A Sabbat celebration can be as simple or complex as you wish.

8.Other rituals: If you’ll be celebrating each full moon, you’ll want to include an Esbat rite in your BOS. You can use the same one each month, or create several different ones tailored to the time of year. You may also wish to include sections on how to cast a circle and Drawing Down the Moon, a rite that celebrates the invoking of the Goddess at the time of the full moon. If you’ll be doing any rites for healing, prosperity, protection, or other purposes, be sure to include them here.

9.Herbs: Ask any experienced Pagan or Wiccan about a specific herb, and chances are good that they’ll expound on not only the magical uses of the plant but also the healing properties and history of use. Herbalism is often considered the core of spellcasting, because plants are an ingredient that people have used for literally thousands of years. Put together a section in your BOS for herbs and their uses. Remember, many herbs should not be ingested, so it’s important to research thoroughly before you take anything internally.

10.Divination: If you’re learning about Tarot, scrying, astrology, or any other form of divination, keep information in here. When you experiment with new methods of divination, keep a record of what you do and results you see in your Book of Shadows.

11.Sacred texts: While it’s fun to have a bunch of new shiny books on Wicca and paganism to read, sometimes it’s just as nice to have information that’s a little more established. If there is a certain text that appeals to you, such as The Charge of the Goddess, an old prayer in an archaic language, or a particular chant that moves you, include it in your Book of Shadows.

12.Magical recipes: There’s a lot to be said for “kitchen witchery,” because for many people, the kitchen is the center of hearth and home. As you collect recipes for oils, incense, or herb blends, keep them in your BOS. You may even want to include a section of food recipes for Sabbat celebrations.

13.Spell workings: Some people prefer to keep their spells in a separate book called a grimoire, but you can also keep them in your Book of Shadows. It’s easier to keep spells organized if you divide them up by purpose: prosperity, protection, healing, etc. With each spell you include, make sure you also leave room to include information on when the working was performed and what the outcome was.

14.The biggest dilemma with any Book of Shadows is how to keep it organized. You can use tabbed dividers, create an index at the back, or if you’re really super-organized, a table of contents in the front. As you study and learn more, you’ll have more information to include – this is why the three-ring binder is such a practical idea. Some people choose instead to use a simple bound notebook, and just add to the back of it as they discover new items.

15.You may want to use one notebook for information copied from books or downloaded off the Internet, and another for original creations. Regardless, find the method that works best for you, and take good care of your Book of Shadows. After all, it’s a sacred object and should be treated accordingly!

1.If you find a rite, spell or piece of information somewhere else, be sure to note down the source. It will help you keep organized, and you'll start to recognize patterns in authors' works.

2.Add a section that includes books you've read, as well as what you thought of them. This way, when you get a chance to share information with others, you'll remember what you've read.

Step 1. Determine the type of black magic spell you want to cast. For example, do you want to create disorder, incite a disaster, bring bad luck?

Step 2. Write a new spell or refer to your book of shadows (see Resources).

Step 3. Ring a bell, chanting, three times:
We extinguish the light,
We render its death,
Violent light, light is dead.

Step 4. Imagine the person you want to cast a black magic spell against. For example, to ward off an enemy and incite fear, ask that fear be cast into his heart and trouble or disaster befall him. Follow by binding your enemy to his own fear and powerlessness. Forbid him from gaining power over you, and close the circle by ringing the bell three more times.

Step 5. Cast a black magic spell to ward off bad luck. Open the circle by extending your arms. Focus your mind on the bad luck that afflicts you and kneel to the ground. Still concentrating, dig a handful of dirt, and holding it in your hand, imagine the trouble or pain you want to cast away. State the exact problem or affliction--for example, trouble at work, a co-worker out to "get you" or gambling debt--and then throw the dirt over your shoulder. Continue to walk away without turning your gaze back to the dirt or the hole you dug in the earth.

Step 6. Cast a black magic spell to get an enemy to move. Write the name and date of birth of the person on parchment paper. Fold the paper with a photo wrapped inside until it is completely rolled around the photo. Guide the rolled paper into a bottle containing vinegar. Throw the bottle into a water source like a lake or ocean. As your hand thrusts the bottle forward, imagine the person leaving, or cast a verbal spell ordering him to leave. The spell must be cast when the moon is in a waning period.

purple candles on the altar. You specified 'white magic' so use white candles.

Candle magick spells are fairly easy and straight forward. The first step is to select or choose a colored candle for the spell being worked. Barring that an appropriate colored candle cannot be found, a white candle is always a good fall back. Take the candle and write or inscribe on it your intention.

Light the candle and either let it burn out or burn for about a period of 10 to 15 minutes. Sit in front of the candle, meditating on your goal. If for example, doing a candle spell for a new job, think of the ideal job that you would like to have. The key here, as visualization is also being used, is to create as complete a picture possible you can of what it is you want to accomplish with the spell.

Candle magick Spells - Basic Rules To Follow:

1) Always smother a flame that is to be extinguished before the candle is completed its burning.

2) Never blow out a flame. This is considered extremely rude to the fire elements.

3) Remember to keep yourself, your belongings and your surroundings safe and protected from fire hazard when working candle magick.

4) You can use any kind of candle that appeals to you. White is always a good choice, but you may want to choose ones whose colors correspond to specific energies. Red, for example, connotes passion. Green brings growth and good health. Yellow improves communication and blue creates harmony and understanding.

5) Before using it, "dress" the candle by rubbing it with olive oil. This imparts your special energies to it and forges a psychic link.

6) Create an altar or special place where you can burn your candle and leave it undisturbed afterwards. You can add flowers, incense or other symbolic items if you wish.

7) Time your candle-burning to correspond to the cycles of the moon. You can find them out by looking on the weather page of your newspaper. To bring something into your life, do your rituals when the moon is waxing (or growing). To rid yourself of something, do it when the moon is waning.

8) Meditate briefly before lighting the candle to help still the mind and bring your desire into focus. When you light the flame, state your intention out loud, in simple, clear terms. Imagine that you already have what it is you want in your life. Watch the flame steadily, but don't stare intently. Focus on being receptive and open to what it is you want.

9) Let the candle burn as long as you want, but NEVER leave it unattended. Be sure to blow it out at the end of your session.

10) Repeat the ritual as often as you like, but don't get obsessive. Candle burning is a way to help you stay open to the possibilities of life. It may seem that your particualr wish didn't come true, but who knows? Maybe its because something better is coming along.

Sprinkle some salt on the altar cloth and, using your finger or your Athame, say, "I bless this salt to make it fit for these my rites. Blessed Be."
Now add a little salt to the water and hold the bowl up towards the sky. Visualise your past relative being present and say "I ask ... (say the relative's name) to let this bowl be the receiver of all my negativity, so that I can cleanse myself and became whole again once more. Blessed Be."
Place the bowl down safely, dip the fingers and thumbs of both hands into the water, and visualise all your negative thoughts and feelings moving through your body, down through your arms and out of your hands into the water. As you do this be aware of yourself becoming lighter, of losing the weight that has been on your mind.
When you are sure that this is completed, remove your hands, shaking the last drops of water from them into the bowl. Take a moment to centre yourself once more, and again, holding the bowl up, say, "I ask ... (say the late relative's name), to take this negativity through their power of the Elements to keep me safe in their hands. Blessed Be."
Now throw away the contaminated water into the earth, but not near any plants that you are trying to grow, or down the drain.

Some Spell Ethics

The central ethic within Wicca is, "An ye harm none, do as ye will." This
applies not just to spells and rituals, but also to everyday life as well, ya
know... Besides, with concepts such as Karma or The Threefold Law, I wouldn't
want to do anything harmful for fear of that harm coming back to me, most likely
three times as bad.

We as Pagans should set a good example anyhow. For many many, many years,
Witches have been cast out as being "evil" people, or we have wrongly taken the
blame when something goes wrong. Yes, it is the 1990's, and one would think by
now that such medieval notions would have been forgotten by now. But, that isn't
the way it is. So, I believe that it is up to us to break those myths. It is up
to us to say, "HEY WORLD!!! I AM NOT A BAD PERSON!!!!!

Anything causing harm to anyone, including oneself and others, and anything
that limits anyone's free will should be expressly avoided!!!

For example, one of the questions hear get the most is, "Corky, how do I make
So-And-So fall madly in love with me?" The answer is simply, "You don't."
Forcing someone in specific to fall in love with you is limiting their free
will. So, how can this be avoided? Well, let's say that all the person wants is
to find a romantic partner and that in their mind, this person is the best
choice. Why not do a spell for "A lover who is perfect for me." and put the
energy out into the universe to bring whoever that is into your life.

There are a lot of people out there who say that doing any spell for any self-
glorification is bad. I, personally, do not see things this way. Yes, if you are
doing spells to make yourself the best person in the world so that you can show
off to all your friends and the people in the checkout line at the local
supermarket, yes, I do believe that would be true. Every now and then, whenever
the need or want arrives, I feel it is OK to splurge a little.

So, if you are planning on doing a spell that may or may not be ethical, how can
you figure out weather or not to do the spell? Well, one good idea is to think
it over. What is my specific need or want? Are there any other ways to go about
getting it? Another good idea, if you know anything about tarot or runes or ???
is to do a reading of some sort to see what the results (or consequences) of
doing such a spell would be, and to take the results of the reading into
consideration before performing the spell.

The Spells

To Bless a New Relationship

Bake a fresh loaf of bread. Hold it up to the moon and ask the lady to bless the
bread as well as the relationship. Break off a piece of the bread for your
partner, as well as one for yourself as well. As you share time together, share
the bread as well. (Do not cut the bread with a knife or any other cutting tool.
Just break off the pieces with your hands. Adding butter or jam might be a good
idea to help sweeten things up a bit.)

To Attract a Love

Play a CD or Tape of some romantic music that means something to you. Make sure
that the music does not include songs that you associate with another person. It
is important to keep specific people out of your mind performing this spell. On
a sheet of cardboard, light a candle of your favorite color to represent you.
Then, light a red or pink candle to represent whoever your new love may be.
Using a red magic marker or crayon, draw a heart around the red candle. Every
day for at least a week, relight the candles in the evening, and as soon as you
light the candles, move them slightly closer together, so that on the last day,
the candles are as close together as possible.

To Heal a Friendship

Shortly after an argument, buy a greeting card which closely expresses what you
would like to say to your friend. Rub the greeting card with lavender leaves
before you give it to them or mail it to ensure that it is well received.

To Bring Adventure to Your Life

Sprinkle the soles of your shoes With Some cinnamon and place some almonds in
your pocket before setting out for the day.

To Protect From Nightmares

Fill a small pillowcase with anise seeds, dragon's blood, and lavender and place
the pillowcase under your pillow when you go to sleep. Ask the Celtic Goddess,
Mare (MAH-re), the bringer of dreams to only bring you nice dreams.

To Quiet a Noisy House

Powder some dragon's blood, and in a small bottle, mix it with sugar and salt.
Cover tightly and secure it someplace in the home where it will not be seen or
disturbed. This will help keep things peaceful and quiet.

For A Peaceful Home

Gather freshly cut parsley and place it in a pan of water. Let it soak for nine
minutes, and then sprinkle the water throughout the house while visualizing a
calm environment. Peace will be restored.

For protection and Purification (Bath)

Steep a teaspoon of basil in a cup of boiling water, and strain out the herb.
Add it to you bath water for a protective and cleansing influence. It is
particularly useful to clean off the feelings left by contact with those who
are negative or controlling.

To Attract Customers to a Business or Visitors to a Home

Make a fine powder out of some basil leaves and sprinkle them around the main
entrance to the home or place of business. It is believed that only good and
friendly people will enter, since it supposedly repels those who intend harm
toward the workers of a business or the occupants of a home.

To Lose Your Troubles

Take a handful of earth and gaze into it. Put all your troubles and thoughts of
distress into it. State exactly what it is that's troubling you. When finished,
throw the dirt behind you and walk away without turning around to look at it.

To Bring Certain Influences Into Your Life

In a plot of prepared land, or in a medium sized flower pot, sow the seeds of
an appropriate plant in the form of a symbol or rune representative of your
need. Tend to the plants. After they sprout, draw a circle around them in the
earth or soil with your power hand. Stand in quiet contemplation of the
growing, living symbol. As it has sprung into existence, so shall your need.

You may want to look in a magical herbal book for the magical influences of
certain herbs.

To Help Heal Depression

Light a green candle. As you gaze into the candle for a few moments, try to
relax as much as you can and clear all thoughts from your mind. Visualize the
Mother Goddess sitting in front of you. Listen for a moment to hear if she has
any words of encouragement for you. Visualize her next hugging your and holding
you as you rock gently back and forth from side to side easing away your pain
and sorrow.

Another good idea, if you suffer from chronic depression is to see a therapist
of some sort. There may be another way to deal with your problems, and
sometimes just talking about it helps too.

To Enchant A Book

Light a blue and an indigo candle. Invoke a Goddess of Wisdom, and ask for her
help to enchant the book. Inscribe the book letting the inscription express the
desired wish.

To Help in Times of Financial Difficulties

With clove or cinnamon oil, trace a money symbol or rune on the largest
denomination of bill that you have. Put this in your wallet and resist spending
it for as long as you can. Every time you look at the bill, visualize the rune
to reinforce its power.

orange calcite

Gather the cloth edges Together to form a pouch. Secure the pouch with the
ribbon and carry it on your person.
